A web or a topic?

A topic is a basically a web page. These can be structured hierarchically, and in general these should be preferred to webs unless you need a web. You can create topics yourself in webs you have edit permissions on. You can control access to topics individually, if you need to keep some things private or restricted.

The main benefit of using a web is that they can be better differentiated; for example each web has properties to control it's rendering, and these affect all topics in that web. If you really want to customise things then I suggest using a web, but too many webs makes searching and linking tricky, so only use these if you really need to.

How to change the left toolbar

If you want to change the left hand tool bar on a given web then simply edit the WebLeftBar topic in that web.
