T2T? - Transistion to Turbulence Projects - Principle Investigator: Dr Sotos Generalis

The aim of the T2T? projects is to model the transition to turbulence of convectively heated flows in thin layers of infinite extent. Here we apply heat to fluid flows either within the fluid or via boundaries of the layer. We also modify the fluid properties, layer inclination and shear flow. This allows us to examine the flow states formed, as convective flow states bifurcate from laminar or other flow states. When the layer is horizontal without shear flow, a variety of isotropic steady flow states are observed on the route to turbulent flows. When the layer is inclined or a pressure gradient is applied (i.e. a shear flow), anisotropy is observed in the flow states on the path to turbulence.
